Those three forms are related, but they are not identical. Burning an aged agarwood chip can produce a changing aromatic experience unlike smelling oud oil on the skin. A modern oud perfume may then interpret the idea even more freely through woods, amber, leather, smoke, rose, saffron and synthetic aroma materials.
Understanding oud therefore requires more than describing it as a dark woody note. Oud is a natural material, a cultural object, an incense tradition, a perfumery ingredient and an entire olfactory category.

What Is Oud?
Oud is the aromatic material obtained from resin-saturated agarwood. Agarwood develops inside certain trees belonging primarily to the Aquilaria and Gyrinops genera.
Healthy, uninfected wood from these trees is usually pale, relatively light and only mildly aromatic. After the tree is injured or subjected to biological stress, it may produce defensive resin around the affected area.
Over time, this resin accumulates within the wood. The affected sections become darker, heavier and much more fragrant than the surrounding pale wood.
This transformed, resinous wood is agarwood. When it is burned, it releases aromatic smoke. When suitable material is distilled, it can produce the concentrated oil commonly called oud oil.
Oud is therefore not simply the normal smell of an Aquilaria tree. It is the result of a complex transformation within the wood.
Are Oud and Agarwood the Same Thing?
The terms are often used interchangeably, but a useful distinction can be made.
Agarwood usually refers to the resin-bearing wood itself. It may be sold as chips, carved pieces, powder or raw material for distillation.
Oud may refer to the fragrant wood, but in perfumery it frequently means the oil distilled from agarwood or an accord inspired by its aroma.
In different regions, the same material may also be known as gaharu, aloeswood, eaglewood, jinkō, chen xiang or oudh. These names can carry different cultural and grading associations.
A bottle labeled “oud perfume” does not necessarily contain a large amount of natural oud oil. The word may describe the intended scent character rather than the precise formula.
How Does Agarwood Form?
Agarwood formation begins when a suitable tree is wounded or otherwise placed under biological stress. Damage can occur through storms, insects, broken branches, animal activity, human intervention or microbial invasion.
The tree responds by producing resinous defensive compounds around the affected tissue. This process can continue and evolve over many years.
As resin accumulates, the wood changes visibly. Pale wood develops darker streaks, patches or dense resinous zones. The most resin-rich pieces may become dark brown or nearly black.
Not every tree produces valuable agarwood naturally. Even within a tree that has formed resin, quality can vary considerably from one section to another.
This irregularity is a major reason natural agarwood is difficult to evaluate and expensive to harvest. A tree may appear promising from the outside while containing relatively little high-grade resinous wood.
Is Agarwood Created by a Fungus?
Agarwood is often simplified as wood produced by a fungal infection. Fungi can play an important role, but the complete biological process is more complicated.
Wounding, microbial activity, the tree’s immune response, environmental conditions, age and time can all influence resin formation.
Researchers continue to study which organisms and stress pathways produce the most desirable resin. The process is not necessarily caused by one universal fungus acting identically in every tree.
It is more accurate to say that agarwood forms as part of the tree’s defensive response to injury and biological stress, often involving fungal or microbial activity.
Which Trees Produce Oud?
The best-known agarwood-producing trees belong to the genus Aquilaria. Related species in the genus Gyrinops can also produce commercially important agarwood.

Where Does Oud Come From?
The natural range of important agarwood-producing species extends across South and Southeast Asia.
Historically important origins include India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar and southern China.
Each origin has acquired its own reputation within agarwood culture and the commercial oud market. These reputations are useful, but they should not be treated as absolute rules.
Regional labels may refer to where the tree grew, where the wood was traded, where it was distilled or the style of aroma associated with a particular market.
A trustworthy seller should be able to explain what an origin claim means rather than relying only on an impressive geographical name.
A Brief History of Oud
Agarwood has been valued for centuries across a vast area connecting India, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, the Arabian Peninsula and the wider Islamic world.
Historical references associate aromatic agarwood with sacred texts, temple incense, medicine, burial rites, court culture, elite hospitality and long-distance trade.
Its history cannot be assigned to a single country or tradition. Agarwood was produced primarily in Asian forests, appreciated within Asian religious and aesthetic systems, and transported through major trade networks to markets far from where the trees grew.
The material’s portability helped increase its value. Small pieces of high-grade resinous wood could carry enormous olfactory and economic significance.
Oud thus became both fragrance and treasure: something to burn, wear, present as a gift, preserve as a collection and exchange across borders.
Oud in Ancient South Asia
Agarwood appears in early South Asian aromatic and medicinal traditions under names related to aguru.
It was used in incense preparations, aromatic compounds and traditional medicine. Its deep fragrance made it suitable for ritual settings and personal scenting.
South Asia was also geographically connected to important agarwood forests and trading routes, allowing the material to circulate between producers, religious centres, royal courts and merchants.

Oud in Chinese Culture
Agarwood has a long history in China, where it is commonly associated with the term chen xiang, often interpreted in connection with fragrant wood dense enough to sink.

In traditional incense culture, agarwood may be appreciated slowly, using carefully controlled heat rather than open flame. This allows the aromatic wood to release different facets in stages.

Oud in Japanese Incense Culture
Agarwood is central to Japanese incense traditions, where it is known as jinkō. Exceptional material may be classified within highly prized categories such as kyara.

How Is Oud Harvested?
Traditional agarwood harvesting requires identifying resin-bearing sections within a tree.
After wood is collected, pale non-resinous material may be removed by skilled workers. This cleaning process reveals the darker aromatic resin embedded within the wood.
Cleaned agarwood may then be graded and sold as chips, carved into objects, ground into incense material or prepared for distillation.

Cultivated agarwood can range from poor to excellent. Tree age, inoculation method, resin-development time, climate, species and distillation skill all matter.
Responsible cultivation is increasingly important because global demand cannot safely depend only on declining wild populations.
How Is Oud Oil Made?
Oud oil is generally produced by distilling resin-bearing agarwood. Hydrodistillation and steam-based methods are widely associated with traditional and commercial production.
The wood is cleaned, cut or ground into smaller pieces. It may then be soaked before distillation.
During distillation, heat and water or steam release volatile aromatic molecules from the wood. Vapour is cooled and condensed, and the oil is separated from the aromatic water.

Traders may consider resin density, darkness, weight, oil content, origin, aroma when heated, size, shape, age and scarcity.
Resin-rich wood is often heavier than pale untreated wood. Some pieces may sink in water, contributing to traditional terminology associated with “sinking wood.”
However, sinking is not a complete quality test. Density can be affected by moisture, structure and adulteration.
Aroma remains crucial. A visually dark piece may not necessarily produce the most beautiful smoke, while a less dramatic-looking chip may reveal exceptional complexity when heated.
What Does Oud Smell Like?
There is no single universal oud smell.
Natural oud can contain woody, smoky, leathery, balsamic, sweet, earthy, medicinal, herbal, fermented, fruity, floral, honeyed, mushroom-like, camphoraceous or animalic facets.
One oil may smell clean and polished. Another may smell wild, damp, barnyard-like or intensely fermented.
The aroma depends on the tree species, origin, resin quality, age, fermentation, distillation style and storage.
This variation is part of oud’s appeal. Natural oud can behave less like a standardised perfume ingredient and more like wine, tea or coffee, where origin and processing create distinct sensory profiles.
Why Does Some Oud Smell Animalic?
Certain oud oils contain earthy, leathery, fermented or animalic qualities that some wearers associate with barns, leather, soil or bodily warmth.

The oil should be given time to warm on the skin. Natural oud can change significantly over several hours.

What Is an Oud Accord?
An oud accord is a perfumer’s constructed interpretation of oud.
It may combine woody, leathery, smoky, ambered, animalic and medicinal aroma materials to suggest agarwood without relying exclusively on natural oud oil.
There is no single standard oud accord. One perfumer may build a clean, polished wood. Another may create a dark medicinal leather. A third may emphasise sweet amber and rose.
Oud accords offer consistency, scalability and creative control. They can also reduce the amount of scarce natural material needed in a formula.
A well-made oud accord is not inherently inferior. It should be judged by its beauty, performance and purpose rather than by the assumption that every perfume must contain a large amount of natural agarwood oil.
Does Every Oud Perfume Contain Real Oud?
No. Many fragrances marketed as oud perfumes rely primarily or entirely on constructed accords.
Natural oud is costly, variable and difficult to standardise. Large commercial perfume production often requires a formula to smell consistent across thousands of bottles.
A perfume may contain a trace of natural oud supported by an accord, or it may use no natural oud at all.
Ingredient formulas are proprietary, and brands do not always disclose the exact amount or origin of natural oud.
Consumers should therefore avoid assuming that price, darkness, strength or the word “oud” proves a high natural-oud concentration.
Natural Oud vs Synthetic Oud
Natural oud oil is chemically complex and can vary from batch to batch. It may evolve unpredictably on the skin and contain challenging animalic, fermented or medicinal nuances.

Modern perfumery does not need to choose exclusively between natural and synthetic materials. Many excellent fragrances combine both.
